Sony is on the agenda with a giant acquisition move that could change the balance in the gaming and entertainment industry. Reuters reports that Sony is in talks to acquire Kadokawa, the parent company of FromSoftware, best known for titles such as Elden Ring and Dark Souls.
With a market capitalisation of $2.7 billion, the acquisition of Kadokawa could expand Sony’s range. It could also help it gain serious power in the anime and manga market. Sony, which already owns a 14 per cent stake in FromSoftware, plans to acquire a 70 per cent share of Kadokawa. Thus, it wants to take control of the studio.
This acquisition means that FromSoftware, led by Hidetaka Miyazaki, can become even stronger under the roof of Sony. However, it is still unclear whether the games will be exclusive to PlayStation. Sony has continued its multi-platform strategy since acquiring Bungie.
Kadokawa’s appeal is not limited to FromSoftware. The company, which owns popular anime and manga series such as Re:Zero and Delicious in Dungeon, is one of the most influential names in Japan’s media industry.
Considered together with Sony’s investment in anime publishing by acquiring Crunchyroll, Kadokawa’s move will strengthen the company’s position in the global anime market.
